AO 2010: Zimonjicand Nestor Cruise Into Semifinals |
Second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic narrowly avoided a quarter-final exit at the 2010 Australian Open as they came back to defeat the new tandem of Arnaud Clement and Jonathan Erlich 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6) on Wednesday afternoon in Melbourne.
Clement and Erlich had a chance to serve out the match at 5-4 in the third set before the Canadian-Serbian duo hit back to keep their title hopes alive at the year’s first major.
Nestor and Zimonjic, who came to Melbourne straight from their title win at the Medibank International Sydney, are through to the Australian Open semi-finals for the first time in three team appearances. They reached the quarter-finals in 2008 (l. to Clement/Llodra) and were upset in the second round last year (l. to Kubot/Marach).
Nestor will be looking to play in the championship match at the Australian Open for the fourth time, having won the title in 2002 with long-time partner Mark Knowles and finishing as runners-up in 1995 and 2003. Zimonjic’s previous best result came in a semi-final finish in 2001, playing alongside Australian Wayne Arthurs.
They will next face the Croatian-Serbian pairing of Ivo Karlovic and Dusan Vemic, who earned their place in the semi-finals by upsetting No. 3 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes 6-3, 6-4.
